JESSICA SMITH
soprano and music teacher
I am at my happiest when I am running or singing in choirs. Before moving to London in September 2019 to start my master's degree at the Guildhall, I was Musical Director of seven youth and adult choirs.
Most notably, I was the Musical Director of the Northamptonshire County Senior Girls Choir, an auditioned youth choir, and three adult community choirs: Greens Norton Community Choir, the Northampton General Hospital Choir, and the Melody Choir.
I have a wealth of experience in the choral world which I bring to my choirs as a musical director. I have sung under the batons of esteemed conductors such as Harry Christophers CBE, Gustavo Dudamel, and Eric Whitacre. I have a genuine love of choral singing and sung in a large number of varied choral ensembles including with the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, the BBC Symphony Chorus, The Choir and Choral Scholars of St Martin in the Fields, Genesis Sixteen, The Choir of Royal Holloway, the Echori Soloists, and smaller quartet singing. I explored my interest in choral singing further by writing my Undergraduate dissertation on the value of choirs in the structure of twenty-first century society.
I have always loved a capella singing and was a member of the Northampton School for Boys Jazz Vocal Group who sang choreographed arrangements of popular and musical theatre songs. I loved the challenges of this type of singing and enjoyed performances and masterclasses with The Swingle Singers, The Real Group and Voces 8, and enjoyed performances at The London A Capella Festival. I was keen to bring this experience to my students and as such organised a workshop with Oxford's acclaimed a cappella group Out Of the Blue for my choirs whilst Musician in Residence at Abbeyfield School. In addition to this, I love experimenting with the possibilities of the human voice and coordinated a workshop series with renowned beatboxer Shlomo for my students at Abbeyfield school to offer them a new perspective about the capabilities of their voice.
I am always interested to hear from new choral ensembles and to expand my choral directing work.
